Avian influenza virus is excreted from the respiratory and digestive tracts of infected birds and is transmitted directly through bird-to-bird contact or indirectly by aerosol droplets or exposure to virus-contaminated inanimate objects or substances known as fomites. The virus can also be transported to other premises by people through contaminated shoes, clothing, equipment, and vehicles.
