Low pathogenic avian influenza (AI), commonly found in wild waterfowl, is generally not considered a significant human health risk. Some strains of low pathogenic AI can occasionally cause eye infections in people. The risk of people contracting highly pathogenic AI, or bird flu, from cleaning wild birds is very low. However, common sense precautions should be taken when cleaning wild game. For related information on what precautions to take against avian influenza transmission while cleaning and eating wild game see FAQ#41253.
