Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) has not been demonstrated to be a significant human health risk. However, extensive human contact with birds infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), particularly the H5N1 strain, may increase the risk of infection in humans. Read more about the history of avian influenza and its impact on human health. While HPAI H5N1 is not present in the U.S., it is always wise to practice good biosecurity:
1. Wear dedicated footwear and clothing when working with birds
2. Dispose of dead birds promptly
3. Always wash your hands with soap and water after handling birds
4. Do not allow visitors to your farm and do not visit other farms if your birds are sick
