Can poultry become infected with novel H1N1?

Yes, confirmed cases of H1N1 have been found in turkeys in Chile and Canada. The infection may have resulted from exposure from infected human caretakers. Although the disease in the affected poultry was mild, there is concern for the mutation of the virus to a more virulant form for either poultry or humans. It is important that people with poultry protect their birds from infection by humans.
