If highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 or bird flu ever appeared in the U.S., how would my 4-H project birds catch it?

Your 4-H project birds can get the virus from • Another infected bird. • Direct contact with infected feces or respiratory secretions. • Indirectly through airborne virus particles. • Infected water sources. • A person who was working with infected birds but didn’t wash his/her hands, clothing, or boots before handling your project birds. • A visitor who has just been to an infected farm or premises. • A friend or neighbor whose birds are infected with bird flu. It is therefore important to practice strict biosecurity by keeping your birds confined, not visiting other properties, and not allowing visitors to your property if bird flu is present in your area.
