In countries where highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 or bird flu has infected poultry, people simply find their birds dead without seeing any signs. Usually, clinical signs of bird flu include:

• Decreased appetite
• Sluggishness or tiredness
• Swelling of the head, eyelids, comb, wattles, and hocks
• Purple-colored wattles, combs and legs
• Runny nose, coughing, sneezing
• Diarrhea

These could also be signs of other poultry diseases, so it is important to seek veterinary assistance to determine the type of illness. If you suspect bird flu, do not transport birds beyond your facility; call your veterinarian immediately.
