When utilizing MR16 ("MR" stands for multifaceted reflector) incandescent halogen lighting in the home, be aware that the temperature of MR16 lamps ("lamps" is the industry term for lightbulbs) can rise to at least 500°F. This high temperature can be dangerous if it comes into contact with flammable materials such as drapes, curtains, or upholstery. In addition, the oil and salts on your fingers and hands can corrode the quartz cover, weaken it, and eventually cause it to shatter. As a safety measure, MR16 lamps must have a cover glass or cover guard when used in open luminaires (fixtures). The cover glass contains any broken fragments when the lamp shatters. The glass covers should be used in outdoor applications as well.
In addition, the heat produced by these lamps should be considered in hot climates, where it adds heat to the space you are trying to cool. This heat buildup can increase your air conditioning costs.
Finally, consider that this excessive heat could potentially damage objects, such as the painting that you are trying to highlight.
