Bark beetles will attempt to colonize any material that they can successfully bore into. Smaller diameter material generally has thinner bark which makes for less work to reach the cambium. However, if beetles bore into material that is too small they will not be able to complete there life cycle due to competition with other bark beetles for the same resource. For example, in the western U.S., ponderosa pine logs must be greater than 4 inches in diameter to successfully support bark beetle colonization.
