Do utility companies report their customers' payment history to credit bureaus?

Sometimes. Many large regional or national utility companies for cable, telephone, and electric service now report to one or more of the three national credit bureaus (i.e., Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion). Check with your utility company to make sure. Since your payment history may be reported, be sure to pay all your bills on time to avoid lowering your credit score. You might consider online bill-paying or automatic deduction of utility bills from your checking account to reduce the risk of making late payments. When using an online system to draft payments from your checking account, make sure that fluctuations in payment amounts do not overdraw your checking account.
