The two primary advantages to crossbreeding are (1) that it is designed to combine desirable traits from more than one breed in a systematic manner, and (2) allows one to take advantage of hybrid vigor, also known as heterosis. In order to reap the maximum benefit from crossbreeding it must be systematic. Attention needs to be given to the breeds used in order that characteristics will compliment one another. Simplicity is a key. The level of hybrid vigor retained over time will be influenced by the number of breeds involved; that is when more breeds are used, the more hybrid vigor is retained. However, if adding breeds creates less simplicity or if the additional breeds to not have much to contribute in the improtant characterists then adding more is not wise. Simplicity and balance are keys. It is also useful to know that the amount of hybrid vigor observed will vary according to the trait. Most hybrid vigor is expressed in traits related to reproduction, fertility, health and general well-being. Traditionally crossbreeding has been used more with meat goats, but dairy goats can benefit from some of the same factors.
