Time of year to purchase.  Does experiencing decreasing daylight hours in the presence of macho bucks, sufficient feed, and if they are reasonably free of worms they will kid in mid-winter with a second, smaller wave in late spring. This biological pattern dictates your choice concerning age of available goats and also their probable reproductive status. Moreover, your own game plan for breeding/kidding schedules must be considered in deciding optimum time of purchase.  Reproduction is probably the major factor in determining profitability.

A few additional points to consider when buying breeding stock, try to purchase directly off the farm or ranch rather than through an auction market in order to minimize exposure to a variety of new pathogens.  Look at the eyes and alertness as indications of general health.  If possible, put your hands on prospective new purchases in order to feel blemishes or abscesses that may be covered by hair at the time.  Finally , if possible purchase from an owner who is manageing the animals and in an environment  similar to yours.
