What is a good way to clean bits?

Using toothpaste and a toothbrush works well and leaves a minty flavor that horses like. There is a wide array of cleaning products, but some leave a bad flavor that horses turn up their nose at. Or you can dip the bit in a bucket of plain water and rub it with your fingers or a cloth to clean it.
