For biodiesel to be sold in the market, the fuel must meet certain quality specifications. In the U.S., biodiesel must meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) requirements for biodiesel fuel in its D 6751 standard. The standard in Europe is defined by EN14214.
Using biodiesel that does not meet the quality specifications may have consequences as severe as engine seizure, filter plugging, and adverse tail pipe emissions.
