A 1998 study by the USDA and US DOE found that using pure biodiesel in urban buses “results in substantial reductions in life cycle emissions of total particulate matter, carbon monoxide and sulfur oxides (32%, 35% and 8% reductions, respectively, relative to petroleum diesel’s life cycle)” (page vi). For more information, see Life Cycle Inventory of Biodiesel and Petroleum Diesel for Use in an Urban Bus. Later studies have also shown that using biodiesel results in less carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and hydrocarbons released into the air. See this fact sheet on biodiesel emissions from the U.S. Department of Energy.
