In order to build a caregiver business, it is important to do some preparation. It is useful to have a one-page handout that you can leave with people that lists your basic qualifications and experience. Include any training in caregiving, nursing, or first aid. Also provide a few testimonials. Have a few references available because most people are concerned about safety and honesty.

To market your services, visit physicians' offices (leave information with the nurse or receptionist). Also try senior centers, churches, senior housing facilities, and social services offices. Even agencies that provide similar services often do so on a limited basis and may have clients who need additional services.

Try to make personal contact with personnel at some of the agencies so that they remember you and feel good about giving a referral.
