In the past, I have thought of dairy as an excellent choice of nutrition, particularly for the price. Recently, I heard two nutritionists warning against, or downplaying, the qualities of dairy. Is there any new data to support what these two folks are saying?

Dairy products are an excellent source of protein, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D and fit into a healthy diet. The milk group continues to be one of the five major food groups in USDA's MyPyramid. MyPyramid recommends three cups of milk products daily (www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/milk.html). Opinions on milk in the human diet may vary, however. USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services use the most current research to guide the development of the Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid. It is very difficult to consume enough calcium without having dairy products in your diet. There is strong scientific evidence to support dairy foods' role in bone health.
