Does the physical position of a home affect energy consumption?

The orientation can affect the energy consumption and efficiency of a home. By maximizing the southern exposure you increase a home's passive solar heating potential and the ability to use daylight to provide lighting in the home.

Cooling costs can be reduced by minimizing western exposures. Shade from trees and awnings, and to an extent overhangs can also minimize the effect of the afternoon sun.

Wind currents may vary depending on the climate and nearby geography and structures. Cold northwest or westerly winds can increase the energy consumption in the winter on the west and northwest facing sides. Windbreaks can help reduce the heat loss.
