Are spay and neuter the same thing? What about castration?

The terminology can be confusing. To neuter an animal makes it incapable of breeding by surgically removing its reproductive organs. The term neuter technically refers to either male or female. The term spay refers to the female procedure (removal of uterus and ovaries), and the term castration refers to the male procedure (removal of testicles). In the animal welfare community, it is very common, however, to hear of spay/neuter programs, which use the term neuter to indicate the male procedure.
