How much time should a horse be kept in a stall versus time in a paddock or pasture?

Horses are natural grazers, and are built to do just that. The more turn-out time, the more exercise. The more exercise and grazing, the better! Horses are healthiest when turned outside on good quality pasture. Even in the winter, it is best to keep them out with free choice grass, hay, and water. However, horses kept outside must have shelter in case of bad weather. Adequate shelter varies based on climate, location, etc. For some horses, this may be a treeline windbreak; for others, a three-sided run-in shelter. Many horses are able to be kept outside 24 hours a day as long as they have food, water, and shelter.
