Panosteitis, sometimes known as growing pains, is a spontaneously occurring lameness that sometimes affects young dogs of large breeds. It is the result of the bones and bone marrow becoming inflamed, but the exact cause is unknown at this time. Infection, genetics, stress, and metabolic and autoimmune disorders have all been suggested as possible causes.

Pano, as it is often called, is slightly more common in males than in females, and some breeds, such as German shepherds, appear to be more prone to it. The pain often starts in a front leg and may alternate from one leg to another, including the hind legs, giving the appearance that the pain is shifting around. The lameness may be associated with fever, loss of appetite, and reluctance to move. It is common for the pain to subside after a few weeks even without treatment and then reappear a few weeks later.

Symptoms may start in dogs as young as 5 months old, and most are completely free of it by 2 years of age. The disease is self-limiting and almost always goes away with or without treatment.

Consult your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. Treatment is usually aimed at relieving pain and discomfort but is not necessary in many cases. Limiting the activity of a young dog may help but is likewise rarely necessary. It is important, however, to maintain your growing puppy at an ideal body weight and prevent obesity as excess weight adds extra stress to the bones, muscles, and joints. Be sure to contact your veterinarian if it appears that your dog is not getting better or if the pain appears to be getting worse.
