The kind of fence that will work best depends on several factors, including how motivated your dog is to find a way out. Once a fence is installed properly, most dogs will be contained. However, if your dog is especially motivated and active, he may attempt to dig under or to climb over a fence. Other considerations for fencing are cost, maintenance, and neighborhood restrictions. Be sure to check local ordinances about fences. Many neighborhood associations and local governmental bodies have fence restrictions.
Many people select chain-link fences for ease of installation and cost effectiveness. However, some dogs learn to climb chain-link, so a solid fence may be the better option. The most common type of solid fence is wood, but wood fences are expensive to purchase and install. In any case, be sure that the gate to the fenced yard is secure. A spring-loaded gate that automatically closes and latches is best.
To prevent digging under a fence, bury either chicken or rabbit wire fencing (available at hardware and home improvement stores) at least a foot deep and fold it inward toward the yard. Attach the wire fencing firmly to the bottom of the fence and cover with dirt. Bricks or large rocks along the fence will discourage digging. Another solution is to lay hog panels (available at farm and home stores) on the ground and attach them to the edge of the fence. Cover with soil. Grass will grow through the panels, hiding them from view.
If your dog jumps or climbs over the fence, you might need to add a top layer of inward-leaning wire fencing or a strand or two of electrical wire hooked to a charging unit similar to that used to contain livestock. Instructions and materials for installing electric fence lines are available at most home improvement or farm supply stores. Follow directions carefully and employ the assistance of a professional if you are not comfortable with installation.
If a physical fence is not allowed, you may be able to install an underground fence. With proper training and installation, these fences can be effective.
