Check with the kennel as to what vaccinations it requires. Many kennels require a Bordetella vaccine (also known as kennel cough vaccine), in addition to the ones your veterinarian has probably already given your dog. Even if the kennel does not require a Bordetella vaccination, you may wish to consult your veterinarian to see if it is recommended. You should be prepared to provide health records if necessary. Also, don't forget to include your dog's tags or some form of identification.
If your dog has a medical condition or needs special health considerations, be sure to include enough medicine for the stay, as well as detailed instructions for the kennel staff.
If your dog has never been away from home, a visit to the kennel can be stressful. You can minimize this stress by leaving a favorite blanket or toy with your dog and asking the kennel to feed your dog its regular food. You may also be able to make arrangements for play time or grooming while the dog is boarded, which can reduce stress.
