Your rabbit's toenails can be trimmed using human toenail clippers or those designed for cats. For smaller rabbit breeds, human clippers provide more control for easier clipping. Have someone help you hold the rabbit in a secure position on its back, or sit with the rabbit lying on its back on your thighs. If the rabbit is nervous in this position, have your assistant cover its eyes. Once the rabbit is calm, locate the "quick," or blood vessel, in the toenail. Cut about 1/8 inch away from the quick to prevent bleeding. If your rabbit has black toenails, try shining a flashlight through the back of the toenail to see where it ends. Have stypic powder on hand in case you cut the nail too closely, causing bleeding. You can also use paper towels and apply pressure to stop the bleeding.
