You will need local zoning approval before beginning your project. The process will happen with your local government, such as the county and/or municipality that the project is located in. The county’s zoning laws and process will apply.

In most cases, a wind project will likely be considered a conditional use (also called special exception) of the land. The wind project will have to apply for permits and meet any requirements in the law, such as setbacks from roads or other structures. A public hearing is typically part of the permitting process, which means that it is important to get the support of others in your community early in the planning process.
