Why does my puppy need so many vaccinations?

How many vaccinations and how often your puppy needs them depend on a number of factors, including what diseases are present in your area, how serious the diseases are, and the risks to your puppy. Although a puppy receives some protection (antibodies) against disease from the mother's first milk (colostrum), it needs a series of shots because that protection gradually goes away. How quickly this happens varies from individual to individual. The antibodies a puppy gets through the milk can interfere with vaccination if the vaccine is given too early, but if not given soon enough, there is a risk the puppy will contract a disease. This makes repeat vaccinations necessary to fully protect the puppy. Your veterinarian can help you decide which vaccinations are necessary and the time frame in which they should be given.
