I've heard some people call my guinea pig a cavy. What does this mean?

Cavy is the correct term for a guinea pig. The name is derived from its scientific name, Cavia porcellus. "Cavia" means short-tailed or tailless rodent. "Porcellus" is the Latin name for little pig.
