Domestic rats can make great pets. Rats are very sociable and curious animals. They are generally very people-oriented and enjoy human contact. They are also affectionate animals and enjoy large amounts of social contact. They should be kept in pairs if you don't plan to handle them regularly. They are intelligent and can easily be taught to come when called and perform tricks, working for food rewards. Rats are very clean animals, washing themselves much like cats do. Pet rats are typically not aggressive, rarely bite, and are quite responsive to their human companion. They tend to live between two and three years.
