Is a controlled burn the same as a prescribed fire?

Yes and no, a controlled burn is typically any fire purposely set by someone, but typically does not include planning or specific goals or objectives. On the other hand the term controlled burn is more widely recognized by the general public then prescribed burning. In fact it has been found that the general public seems to understand and feels more comfortable with the term controlled burn because it does imply that the fire is being contained or controlled.
