In the Great Plains and Eastern Forests there is no need to defer grazing. Historically, grazing animals followed fires and selected for the most recently burned areas due to increased plant palatability. However, animals tend to concentrate on these areas until a more recent burned area is available, thus when a manager wishes to move livestock, fire is a good tool to achieve this. This is more ecologically sound way of moving livestock than the contemporary method using fences.
