If your veterinarian does not already have a resident or visiting veterinarian who specializes in exotic pets, ask him or her to refer you to one. For exotic mammals, the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians has a searchable directory on its website. For reptiles and amphibians, the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians also has a searchable site. For birds, use the "Find a Vet" search function on the Association of Avian Veterinarians Web site.

Local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation organizations and/or zoos may also be able to refer you to veterinarians whom they consult for their mammalian, avian, reptilian, or amphibian cases. Contact the veterinary college in your state to see if there's a listing of local veterinarians or if a veterinarian specializing in exotics is on staff. It's a good idea to locate a vet who specializes in exotic animals before you purchase your pet in case an emergency arises.
