We have been feeding large amounts of earlage to feedlot cattle for many years. We have always used a recutter screen in our forage harvester but are considering using a kernel processor. We start cattle from 550 lb up to 1,000-lb yearlings. Earlage is the base of our ration, and we were wondering if the kernel processor would increase our feed efficiency.

In theory, every kernel that is cracked or broken will be digested or have a greater probability of getting digested than if left whole. Thus, with greater processing, you should see improvements in efficiency. However, if you are currently obtaining a kernel broken or crack rate in excess of 65%, you will not see much improvement. Because this is a high-moisture product, it tends to get processed by the ruminant more efficiently than if it was dry.
