Much depends on the source of the planting stock and variety and what is cold weather in the south or how far south. Plant sources from a more northern source will tend to be hardier. The variety also plays a role in survival. If the variety has genetics that enhances it's ability to survive colder temperatures then the chances are good for survival. The overall underlying point though is what is cold. If you are talking down to 32 F in most cases probably yes---the top part of the plant may be affect but it would likely come back. If you are talking to 0 F much is dependent on the variety. Another point to make has the plant gone dormant? If not damage is more likely.
