The 2005 Census of Aquaculture by the United States Department of Agriculture indicated that there are 494,995 acres, owned or leased, in aquaculture production on 4,309 farms. The United States aquaculture industry generates about US$1 billion each year with 70% of that total being generated by catfish production (Timmons, 2005; USDA, 2005).
