Taking the recommended doses of omega-3 supplements is normally not associated with serious side effects. However mild side effects such as upset stomach are common with the use of fish oil supplements. Diarrhea, burping, acid reflux/heartburn/indigestion, abdominal bloating, and abdominal pain may occur in some individuals. Fishy aftertaste can also be a common effect. These side effects can be minimized if fish oils are taken with meals and if doses are started low and gradually increased. Both flaxseed and flaxseed oil may cause diarrhea. Flaxseed taken without plenty of fluid can make constipation worse, or rarely, create intestinal blockage. The fiber in flaxseed may lower how well the body absorbs other oral medications.
