Supplements are not recommended for children. Based on information from the National Institutes of Health, omega-3s are used in some infant formulas, although effective doses are not clearly established. Eating fresh fish should be limited in young children to 12 ounces per week, due to the presence of potentially harmful environmental contaminants. Fish oil capsules should not be used in children except under the direction of a physician.
