Do fish oil supplements contain mercury and other toxins?

Yes, it is possible for fish oil supplements to contain mercury and other contaminants, but they are not likely to contain much at all since most contaminants are found in the fish flesh and muscle, not in its fat. Recently Consumer Labs found that none of the 52 fish oil and omega-3 supplements they examined contained detectable levels of mercury, PCBs, or other contaminants found in fish. Just to be safe, when you buy fish oil supplements check the label on the container to make sure they have been tested by a reputable consumer laboratory and that the supplements are free of these harmful compounds.
