Can my doctor prescribe omega-3s?

Yes, your doctor can prescribe omega-3’s, but only as a means of treating high triglycerides. The FDA has approved the use of GlaxoSmithKline’s Lovaza for this purpose. Doctors can also prescribe pre-natal vitamins that contain omega-3s.

In all other cases omega-3s must be purchased over the counter. However, it is always wise to consult your doctor or other health care provider before taking omega-3 supplements, especially if you: have a disease or medical condition, take any medications, are pregnant, are planning to become pregnant, are nursing, or are planning to have surgery. Your doctor may recommend a different dose of omega-3s than that which is recommended on the label.
