What fish should I avoid when I am pregnant?

Last Updated: October 01, 2010

During pregnancy it is recommended that women avoid consuming the large predator fish--these are shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. The reason for this is that these are the fish that contain the most contaminants and that therefore may be most harmful to the developing fetus. The higher up the food chain you go in terms of larger fish eating smaller fish, the higher the concentrations of mercury and other industrial contaminants become.
