Preparation of grape vines for winter will depend on the type of grapes that are being grown and the region where they are being grown. Most grapevines will begin the process of acclimation normally after harvest to prepare for cold temperatures. Make sure that the soil profile is well watered and that growth has slowed or stopped. New growth that occurs too late during the growing season will not harden off properly and will be killed during the winter. Also, if grow tubes were used around newly-planted or young vines, they should be removed in late summer or early fall to allow vines to acclimate properly. Graft unions on young vines (up to 5 years old) everywhere should be covered with soil or fine mulch to a height of 6-8 inches above the union to prevent cold injury. Graft unions of mature vines or entire vines of cold-tender varieties may need to be covered for the winter if they in colder regions of the U.S.
