Hand operations include leaf removal, lateral removal and suckering. All will allow more light into the canopy and improve ripening. In areas prone to hot temperature and low humidity, growers should take care not to expose grapes to direct sunlight for fear of over-exposure and sunburn damage. Shoot positioning via movable wires will also help to control growth and expose fruit to better light environment. In commercial vineyards, leaf removal and hedging (trimming) are usually done mechanically, particularly hedging. In addition to removing suckers from trunks, shoots are removed from the cordon to space fruit bearing canes for adequate air movement in the canopy. Care should be taken not to remove shoots excessively, as growth of the remaining shoots can be stimulated.
