Will closer grapevine spacing, like that found in Europe, give higher quality grapes?

Not necessarily. Spacing in the vine row is a complex interaction of factors, such as scion growth potential, rootstock growth potential, and soil fertility. The higher all three of these factors, the greater the distance that is recommended between vines. Close vine spacing in many European vineyards stems from their use of shallow infertile hillside soils and rootstocks with low growth potential. When growers closely space vine under conditions where growth potential is high, excessive growth will lead to crowded canopies and shading-related fruit quality problems.
