Cooperative common stock or equity capital is not openly traded to non-members. Without a means to readily attract outside equity investment, cooperatives often need debt to finance new and existing operations. In 2009 it was found that smaller cooperatives financed at least 10 percent of assets with long-term debt while the largest agricultural cooperatives financed 22 percent of assets with long-term debt. For more information see Cooperative Statistics, 2009.
