I am 70 and still working. I had four stitches and submitted my health insurance. The hospital didn't file a claim until it was too late to collect. Now, the $52 charge is $1,780 and was turned over to a collection agency, which is threatening to garnish my paycheck. Can they do that?

Bills of any type, including medical bills, can increase with interest and fees if they remain unpaid. However, your situation sounds a bit severe: $52 to $1,780 is a huge increase. You should consider contacting an attorney or legal services agency for assistance with this matter. Garnishments can only take place following a court judgment.
