I applied for a loan six months ago. I was denied because I filed bankruptcy six years ago and have high balances on my credit cards. My father who has a credit score of 789 has agreed to co-sign. I am in Texas, and he is in Puerto Rico. What are my chances of getting approved?

Your situation is complicated. Loan approval will depend on the lender's assessment of your financial capacity to repay the amount that you want to borrow. Your bankruptcy from six years ago is still on your credit report so this is a negative factor. So are your high credit card balances. The fact that your co-signer is not nearby could also be a factor. We cannot predict whether you will get approved for a loan. You can only try and see what happens. Your financial situation is precarious, however. You might also want to contact a local consumer credit counseling service for assistance. See www.nfcc.org to find contact information for a local credit counseling agency. We would like your feedback on this Personal Finance Frequently Asked Question.
