Description:
Julie Grossman, Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University, will explain how legume cover crops, through a symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil rhizobia bacteria, can be used to provide new nitrogen to organic crops through the process of nitrogen fixation. We will review the process of nitrogen fixation, and provide recent data describing the amount of nitrogen fixed by common and some novel cover crop legumes used in organic agriculture.
