The United Nations has declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) to increase public awareness of cooperatives, promote their formation and growth, and encourage governments to establish policies supporting cooperative development. With the theme of “Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World,” the IYC seeks to foster the growth and establishment of cooperatives all over the world. The IYC will also highlight the strengths of the cooperative business model as an alternative means of doing business.
