LOGAN, Utah – Utah State University Extension co-hosts the 33rd annual Arizona/Utah Range Livestock Workshop and Tour April 5-7. Workshops on Tuesday, April 5, are held at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Hurricane, workshops Wednesday, April 6, are held at Frontier Movie Town in Kanab and a field tour is held Thursday, April 7, at the Carrol Ranch on the Arizona Strip.
Workshop topics include matching cattle to range, matching sires to range and cow herd, cattle operations of the Carrol Ranch, the Arizona range mineral program and ranching on cheatgrass. Other topics include supplement strategies for grazing livestock, broom snakeweed research update, backgrounding calves while comparing revenues, the evolution of federal land agencies and funding natural resource and ranch programs.
Topics good for many ranchers in Utah, Arizona and Nevada
According to Kevin Heaton, USU Extension associate faculty for Kane, Garfield and Washington counties, the workshops are designed for those who operate ranches on the Arizona Strip, but the topics are applicable to many ranchers in Utah, Arizona and Nevada.
“A goal of the workshop is to involve federal land management agencies,” Heaton said. “During the workshops and tour, ranchers and federal land managers learn the most recent science regarding livestock management, grazing and range management. This program develops the foundation for managing by science instead of emotion or personal bias resulting in excellent working relationships between ranchers and public land managers.”
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, and workshops begin at 8 a.m. April 5 and 6. Several organizations and industry sponsors provide funding for the workshop, which pays for workshop proceedings and lunch. In addition, participants can win door prizes, including two ranch-raised Angus bulls from the Atkin Ranch, a Savage rifle, NFR tickets, dutch ovens and more.
Additional hosts for the workshop include The University of Arizona, Bureau of Land Management Arizona Strip District, USDA Forest Service and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
