Will the forests killed in the recent Western North American bark beetle outbreak recover, and if so, how quickly?

Yes. However, the process may be very slow, and the succeeding forest may have a different species mix than the previous one. Depending on geographic and climatic conditions, forests may recover at rates we are accustomed to after a stand-replacing fire or clear-cutting. If conditions that caused the outbreak, such as drought and warmer temperatures, continue to persist or worsen, then forest recovery could slow down significantly.
