I planted Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli late this spring. I didn't know these were heat-sensitive plants. I've laid down a thick layer of white shredded paper mulch to reflect the heat and keep the ground cool in hopes that the plants will thrive. What do you think?

All of these vegetables are members of the Cruciferae family and are considered cool-season plants. All need to mature before the average daily temperature exceeds 75°F. Temperatures above that average will cause the plant to "bolt" (flower and go to seed prematurely). Your attempt to keep the roots cool is not going to have any beneficial effect.
