Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

I'm looking for something to put on a hill (full sun, 50-plus feet long with a four- to five-foot slope). It's become too much trouble to cut the existing grass. How do I keep the grass from coming up into a ground cover? What about crown vetch? I live in Minnesota.

If you want to start ground covers on your hill, you will need to kill the grass first. Use a glyphosate herbicide (non-selective) on the area, then plant with ground cover after the appropriate waiting period. Listed below is a site for you to visit which can guide you through the process of picking out appropriate planting materials. Crown vetch isn't recommended because it has become a serious invader in Minnesota (even though it is on the list of plants for "Rough Sites"). One plant can spread up to 10 feet long, while forming new roots and new plants as it spreads. Other options will not present such problems. See Ground Covers for Rough Sites for more information on alternatives.
